WASHINGTON – On Monday, April 11, 2002, the U.S. House Select Committee on Economic Disparity and Fairness in Growth – Chaired by Rep. Jim Himes (CT-04) – will travel to the State of Wisconsin to conduct a series of field events in Kenosha and Milwaukee focusing on higher education, affordable housing, and community workforce development.

Led by Ranking Member Rep. Bryan Steil (WI-01) and Select Committee Member Rep. Gwen Moore (WI-04), the bipartisan congressional delegation will have an opportunity to hear directly from local experts and community leaders about the pressing economic issues facing the region, as well as examine practical approaches to prepare workers for the rapidly changing economy, assist them in finding family-sustaining jobs, and help them secure safe and stable affordable housing.

Monday, April 11, 2022

Monday’s field hearing, “Pathways to Opportunity: Lessons from Kenosha,” will take place at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in Kenosha at 1:30pm CT and will focus on education paths that allow workers to enter, re-enter, and remain in the workforce. Hosted by Ranking Member Steil, lawmakers will hear from witnesses on what effective solutions in Southeast Wisconsin are in place to support the needs of workers.

Tuesday’s field events will take place in Milwaukee and begin with a bus tour through select neighborhoods, spotlighting deindustrialization, racial inequities, botched urban renewal efforts, and current work underway to revitalize neighborhoods. The tour will depart from the Pfister Hotel at 8:30am CT and will be followed by a field hearing at noon CT at the Milwaukee Public Library where experts will provide historical context about the housing challenges in Milwaukee, especially for communities of color, and highlight programs that are making a difference for residents. Immediately following the hearing, Select Committee Members will hold a public Q&A session with local community stakeholders for roughly 30 minutes.
